Patreon

I arrived at Patreon hoping to keep my songwriting flowing and to connect with my live music community while the road is closed. I can write a song in my kitchen and play it for myself, but it doesn't feel real until I play it for someone else.

Long before I head into the studio, I try out my new songs at live shows. Then I take the songs home and fuss over them and play with them before locking them down on an album. When I tour with a new record in hand, I feel the songs transform again as I play them night after night, and that fuels me to write even more. This cycle is how I make my living, and it is also the water and sunlight that helps my songs grow.

I was two days away from recording my new album when coronavirus shut the studio's doors and shut my band in our separate homes. This is the longest stretch of time I’ve ever spent without a live show or a proper tour on the near horizon. I can’t load my guitar and songs in the minivan and drive them to you just now, but I still can share them here and keep my songwriting engine in gear.

I'm hoping my Patreon site can help bridge this time I’ll be spending off the road before my next record comes out. I want to use this space to experiment and play, just like I do when I sing a new song at a show, at soundcheck or in the green room. I want to share songs and the stories behind them without the pressure of the infinite memory of social media and streaming services and without the finality of an official record release. I can’t tell you exactly what form this Patreon site will take as it evolves, but at the very least - every month on Patreon, I will share a new song for patrons only.

I'm planning to spend a lot of time here with my songs while the curtains are closed and the theater’s slowly filling up. I hope you’ll join me here backstage.

Caitlin
